Major Overview

The school's first-level discipline of chemical engineering and technology includes two second-level disciplines, applied chemistry and industrial catalysis. Applied chemistry is one of the earliest bases for talent education and scientific research in this field. In 1996, it was approved as a key discipline of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, while successively designated as Shanghai's key discipline and national key discipline in 2000 and 2001. The subject of industrial catalysis began to recruit postgraduate students in 1978 and offered degree programs at master levels, approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. In 1986, it began to recruit doctoral students majoring in organic chemical engineering (oriented in industrial catalysis) and was approved to offer doctoral degrees in Industrial Catalysis in 1998. It was selected by Ministry of Education as a national key discipline in 2007, being one of the earliest bases for talent education and scientific research in industrial catalysis in China. The discipline possesses first-class teaching and research facilities, hosting national and provincial bases such as the Key Laboratory for Advanced Materials (KLAM), the Institute of Fine Chemicals, the Institute of Industrial Catalysis, and Applied Chemistry. In addition, there are internationally renowned faculty experts, including academician members of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), foreign members of CAS (Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry), and foreign academicians of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), as well as dozens of national and provincial talent plan candidates. The discipline's outstanding scientific research results have won awards such as the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award and the First Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. Doctoral graduates of this discipline mainly engage in scientific research and technological development in universities, large and medium-sized enterprises and scientific research institutions, highly praised by employers.

Educational Objectives

The discipline aims to foster high-end international talents in chemical engineering, adapting to chemical engineering and technology, other related subjects, and modern chemical industrial development. The training objective requires graduate students with a personality of social responsibility, excellent moral cultivation, and academic ethics. In addition, graduates are expected to possess the fundamental theories and systematic professional knowledge, the spirit of innovation and teamwork, and an international board perspective. Thus, the graduate will be qualified for state-of-the-art research, education, and management in modern chemical industries and related areas.
