The Computer Science and Technology discipline was awarded the right to confer Master level degrees in 1990 and doctoral level degrees in 2006. The discipline has abundant academic research resources and a formidable faculty. Over many years, it has been continuously funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, "863" and "973" among other national scientific research projects as well as by a large number of provincial, ministerial and enterprise level research and development (R&D) projects. This discipline has developed its own research characteristics in the branches of Artificial Intelligence, Software engineering, Trustworthy Computing, Network Information Processing and other fields, and has earned widespread influence within China. Their research achievements have won a second place National Science and Technology Progress Award and more than 30 provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards. Moreover, when focusing on the reform of educational content and methods, it has undertaken many national and provincial teaching reform projects, managed 3 state-level and 3 Shanghai City Excellent Courses, received 3 second place National Teaching Achievement awards and over 10 Shanghai Teaching Achievement awards. Furthermore, with reliance on the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Institute of computer technology, the computer teaching experiment center, the information center, and other units, are able to provide adequate experimental conditions and a good working environment for the training of senior scientific and technical personnel who specialize in computer science and technology.

Students will receive many opportunities to understand the current situation and development trend of computer science and technology, acquire a definitive innovation ability as well as team spirit and further obtain scientific research abilities regarding computer science and technology and solving practical engineering problems. Individuals will become competent for the professional working field of information technology research, revolving around software and hardware development for product R&D, and can even choose to further pursue a doctoral degree in related subjects.
The program duration for master’s students is 3 years, with a maximum extension of 5 years. Course credits remain valid for 5 years from the date of enrollment.
